Introduction

      Graphic design is one of the on-the-spot careers at present for it generates part of the environment that surrounds us. Increasingly, people are not in need of printed magazines or leaflets. Moreover, besides outdoor advertising like enlargements and neon sings, there was the arousal of web design and its revolution, which contributed with more than 900 million web pages published. This has altered the classical role of graphic designers who are challenged every day.

Thus, being graphic designers the most required professionals in the industry, we have conceived this Professional Graphic Designer course, which includes 2008 up-to-date contents and covers all leading-edge graphic design trends.

Goal:
This course allows the student to apply both theoretical and practical aspects in Graphic Design through exercises and projects for different applications, focused not only on printing, but also on web and multimedia design.

The course is aimed at people with basic computer operating skills. 

 

Course Syllabus

       Module 1 : Graphic Design Essentials ( 1 month )

    - What is Graphic Design?  

    -   The graphic project. Stages in a graphic project. Graphic composition. Concepts and historical and current case studies.

   - Design types.

    - Different means of publishing graphic jobs. 

Module 2 :  Illustration and Graphic Edition ( 5 months ) 

Working on Bitmaps and Vector Graphics.

- Illustration techniques.

Bitmap image editing.

Adobe Illustrator (8-9-10 versions): 

- Tools. Colour Palettes. The Workspace. 

- Visual representations. Colour adjustments. Colour channels. 

- Selection tools. Most frequently used commands. 

- Photo retouching. Create composite images. Image montage and effects. 

- Masks and Filters. Layers and Channel utilities. 

- Using a scanner. 

- Montage and special effects. 

Graphics file format conversion.

Vector Drawing and Illustration: Corel Draw, Illustrator

Corel Draw (10 -12 - x versions )

Introduction. Object and Vector Graphics: Concepts.

- Tools: How to draw using Corel Draw. Guidelines, rules, etc. Nodes editing. 'Arrange' tab.

Change text, character, paragraph, text boxes. 'Effects' tab.

Inserting graphics. Precision work. 'Transform' tab.

Create patterns and arrows. Using layers.

Adobe Illustrator (8-9-10 versions):

- Introduction and fundamentals.

- Selection types.

- Basic Forms. Drawing tools. 

- Combined forms.

- Painting. Painting techniques. 

- Straight and curved lines. Open and closed paths. 

- Text Work.

- Layers. Advanced features. 

- Printing.

    Module 3  : Layout ( 3 months ) 

Layout:

      -   Text handling. 

    - Text typography, different document types editing (leaflets, brochures, magazines, etc).

    -   Documents and print-ready originals preparation..

Adobe InDesign 

- Tools. 

- Master pages. Page numbers on master pages

- 'Place’ command. ‘Autoflow’ command. 

- Rules, guides and columns. Editing objects. Tabs. 

- Texts and text boxes. Capital letters. Text editor.

- Text objects contouring. 

- Graphics. Image scanning.

- Create colours. Colour palette. The ‘Style’ window. Control palette. 

- Insert objects from Corel Draw and other software. 

- Printing.

QuarkXpress  

- Installation. Quark’s screen. 

Create a document. Save. Open and close.

Paragraphs format. Text boxes.

Partition and justification. Interline grid. Tabs. Borders.

Picture boxes. The ‘Picture Style’ Tab.

Creating lines on the page. Text paths. 

Framing boxes. Object contouring. Duplicate and eliminate objects. Grouping objects. Changing object shape and content.

- Colour in Quark. Applying colour in Quark.

- The ‘Page’ Tab. Editing and applying page layout. E

- The ‘Utilities’ Menu. Spelling and dictionaries. Fonts and images in a document.


    Module 4 :  Colour and Printing ( 2 months ) 

Colour 

- Colour theory. The chromatic circle. Primary colours.

- Colour, light and pigment. Harmony and contrast. Scales and shades.

The meaning of colour. Pantone system. Colour calibration. 

- Colour separation. The CMYK model.

Printing

- Técnicas de impresión . 

Typography. Typology and graphism. Papers and inks.

Paper types according to the technical or economic aspects of the project presentation.

- Make a printing model. Printing modes. 

- Quality control in printing. Preparing print-ready originals. 

- Printers in the market. The Printer Operator’s Role.

- Pre-printing production and filming. Different print software: Corel Draw, Photoshop, PageMaker, etc.

    Module 5: Web and Multimedia Design (3 months)

HTML

- Introduction to HTML.

Create hyperlinks, insert images, insert backgrounds, animated images and audio files.

- Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers design. Similarities and differences.

Create tables, fonts and colour hyperlinks.

Create frames and maps. Design interactive visitors’ forms to fill in with comments inputs.

Publish a website. Webpage hosting: sending files to a web server.

Macromedia Dreamweaver

Creating web pages using a web page editor upon the professional designers’ preferences.

- Create pages using Dreamweaver. The basics.  

- The workspace. Different windows. The ‘Object’ menu. Context menus.

- Webpage elements. Titles. Formats. Links. Colours.

- Defining hyperlinks. Defining information order and structure.

- Layers: a unique feature of this software.

- Tables: creating and formatting tables.

- Style sheets and templates.

Macromedia Flash

- Create Internet or other multimedia applications and presentations for Internet or other media.

- Introduction. Tools.

- Rationale. Timeline. Workspace size.

- Motion Tweening effect. Exercises - Object motion, Text motion, Text and Object motion, Text Fade effect.

- Motion Guide effect. Font effects.

- Symbols. Animated clips basics. Practice exercise on animation - Movie clips.

- Audio. How to insert audio in animations. MP3 format files essentials. 

- Publishing. How to turn an animation into HTML and .EXE file formats.

 

    Module 6 :  Professional Development ( 1 month )

   - How to organize and plan a professional job.

    - Business and corporate image. 

    - The Professional Contact Network on the Internet and Red21.com.

    - Teleworking: Design goes global.

- Quality requirements for the Graphic Arts industry.

- Advice on Specific Aspects of this course.

Course Features

Program length: 15 months or a year in intensive mode (3 hours approx. Daily).

Diploma: Master degree in Professional Graphic Design

Level: Master or expert

Degree homologated by Red21 subsidiaries in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Uruguay under the non-formal teaching regulations.

Methodology:

- The course is set to the student’s pace, PC hardware availability and background knowledge.

- The lessons and exercises are downloaded from our website by a username and a password.

- Once the course has started, a teacher is assigned to the student who will go over the topics, correct his/her exercises, and answer his/her questions.

- The student can take lessons at any time of the day and on any weekday. It is not necessary to be online at any specific time.

- Each lesson has related topic exercises.
